Rick Barnes Says, "Look Out!"

The Rev. Rick Barnes, one of our missionaries with American Baptist International Ministries serving in Baja California, Mexico, spent the weekend with First Baptist May 22-24. In his messages Saturday evening and again Sunday morning, he shared the work of church planting in which he partners with Mexican pastors who are planting churches in Mexicali, a city of over 1 million people just south of the US border. "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care," he said. And that applies to the ministry in Mexico as much as it applies in Glens Falls.

"As long as you are looking down at your belly button, you can't see very much, and you can't do very much" Rick told us on Saturday night. "But once you look up and start looking out, you can see a world full of beautiful places that God has made. Look out! And go out!"

In other conversations with First Baptist youth and several of the Deacons, we have begun laying the groundwork for a group from First Baptist to participate in Rick's ministry first-hand next year. We look forward with anticipation to a close continuing partnership with Rick.

You Are the Light of the World!

Blair C. receives the light at Baptism
Blair C. receives his baptism candle as a sign of the light of Christ

April 19, 2009

First Baptist rejoiced today as we received Blair C. into membership by baptism upon his affirmation of faith. In a statement earlier this week before the Diaconate, Blair said, "I think the Gospel is about what God and Jesus wants me to do, which is to be kind and caring towards others. I should help other people out with their needs. When someone tries to get me to do something that is wrong, I should rely upon my faith to give me strength to know the right thing to do." Blair's immediate plans are to begin serving with the volunteers in the Baptist Bargain Basement and to become more involved with the youth group's activities. Welcome, Blair, to the First Baptist family of faith!

Youth Group Returns 281%

April 16, 2009

Pastor Green issued a challenge to First Baptist Youth during the seasion of Lent. Based on Jesus' parable of the talents, Pastor Green gave each youth group member $20 to do whatever they wanted to in faith for 6 weeks. Easter Sunday was the day of reconing. Several of the youth held a silent auction and did other projects to "invest their talents." By Easter, they had accumulated a return on the initial investment of 281%. Earlier in the year, Pastor Green had invited the children to a similar exercise, where each was given $6 to work with over 4 weeks. The younger children had a 243% return. Over the summer, the congregation's adults will be given the opportunity to live the parable.
